Community Project, an island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro State

This is a wonderful opportunity to live as part of a unique culture on an island in this particularly beautiful part of Brazil.  Only a ten minute boat ride from one of Brazil’s loveliest colonial towns, this traditional fishing community has been suffering because of a decline in the fishery catch.  They need to develop other skills and sources of income.  Several projects have been set up in areas such as English teaching, creating a local library, development of tourism and rural enterprise.  They also need advice and training in hygiene and basic health/nutrition.  Their young people would like to learn music, drama and IT.  Our volunteers will help raise skill levels, awareness and self esteem. 

COSTS

All of our placements are tailor made.  Costs will vary according to the level of accommodation you require and your preferred length of placement.  As a guideline, our charges for a 4-week placement in a private homestay or self catering accommodation will start at £1,270.

Duration of Stay

Ideally 8 to 16 weeks to develop relationships and trust but placements can be designed for as little as 2 weeks up to a maximum of 6 months.

Accommodation

You will either live with a local family or in a self catering apartment.  For an extra cost, we can arrange for you to stay in a small local, family run hotel.

What is Included

Our charges include accommodation in the family home with breakfast or in self catering accommodation when you will be responsible for your breakfast and dinner, lunch when working in the placement, transfers from the airport to your accommodation while on the orientation course in the initial arrival city, 2 day orientation course in Brazil, pre-departure briefing in London, placement management and supervision, local orientation, project contribution, the services of our expert local Representative. 

What is Not Included

Your airfares, travel costs between the city of arrival in Brazil and location of the placement, travel to the airport in UK, insurance, any visa costs, inoculations, personal expenses such as phone calls, travel, meals other than those specified above.

Support for the Project

BVB will ensure part of your charge is spent in Brazil for the direct benefit of our projects there.  Again, the amount will vary according to each client's placement duration but will never be less than £200.00.  You will be fully involved in the decision on where your contribution will be spent on your return to the UK.

This beautiful area of Brazil is rich in history and cultural traditions.  With both mountains covered in Atlantic Rainforest and beautiful beaches, there are opportunities for walking, climbing, sailing, as well as interesting cultural activities, including an international literary festival held annually.
